Activity 2 - Part II: Uploading your web page

You will post your assignments in your "myweb account" that the university provides. When you signed up for your USF NetID, you automatically were assigned ~ 25 MB (your account on the USF myweb server). That’s plenty for developing the web pages required by this course - you'll see. For the purposes of this class, the department suggests you use this web account.

MyWeb is free (well, you are unavoidably paying for it somewhere in your student fees) and readily accessible. If you already have web space that you pay for and are comfortable using, such as a Roadrunner or a Verizon account or other hosted space that you can upload a html file to, then let me know. I will not accept projects posted on free Internet space that is packed with banner ads and pop-up windows, or that uses templates or WYSIWG software. Repeat: I will not accept projects posted on free Internet space banner ads and pop-up windows, or that uses templates or WYSIWG software . It is difficult to grade pages on such sites and it is inappropriate for this exercise.

To complete assignment 2 please do the following :

Step 1 - Watch this tutorial http://www.cas.usf.edu/lis/distance/tutorials/SSH_Install/demo.html

You may also want to download and use these installation instructions

Step 2 - Download the necessary software

Step 3 - Watch this tutorial http://www.cas.usf.edu/lis/distance/tutorials/SSH_Files/demo.html

Depending on your computer's resolution you may have to scroll a bit.

This tutorial will give you instructions on how to transfer your web page (from Part I) your computer to your folder of the myweb server. Please follow these instructions.

Here is a handout that demonstrates this procedure.

If you have difficulty with this process please call Academic computing support at
813-974-1222 or toll free at 1-866-975-1222

Step 4 - View your web page on the Internet. On a computer that is connected to the Internet, open your browser window (such as Internet Explorer or FireFox). Type the URL to your web page into your browser.

What is the URL? If you have successfully posted your page on your USF myweb account or other space, you can open or view your page in a web browser. Type in the address http://*******.myweb.usf.edu/menu.html (where ******* represents your myUSF/Blackboard NetID username. After your web page successfully loads, copy the link that appears in the address bar. It should look something like http://rdlewis.myweb.usf.edu/menu.html (but with your own netid in the first part of the domain name).

If you want to change something on a page that is up in the server... You can just drag the page back down to your desktop (from the server), and edit it, and then drag it back up to the server. Don't forget to reload.

Step 5 - When you complete this activity, please let me know.

Here's how:

  1. Return to Blackboard
  2. Go to "Assignments"
  3. Click on the week 2 folder
  4. Follow the instructions provided there.

I will review your assignment and enter a grade for successful completion. You must complete activities 2.0 and 2.5 before moving on to any other project.
